Very good person and imaginative maker, with "monstruous" gaitas with 6 drones!!!

I looked at his website and was amazed by those gaitas! Even the gaita with 5 drones is incredible!

I just bought a gaita stamped "Antonio Gandoy".
Has anyone any information about this maker?
The instrument is a one drone model in boxwood, with a rubber bag (eeekh..., will be replaced very soon) and I got it very cheap.

Where'd you get it?

Bought it on Ebay. The guy who sold it lives just 25 kilometers away from me, he had bought it in Santiago de Compostela. He told clearly it is not a master instrument, but it seems to be quite well made.
I thought, if it's boxwood and stamped, it can't be too bad...

How does it sound?

It sounds good to me, but I'm not at all a Gaita expert...
The chanter is in tune, with a strong yet pleasant sound, the drone is steady. If I consider it as just being "a bagpipe", I would say, it is perfectly okay, although I'm quite sure that someone experienced with gaitas will hear features that escape my hearing.

I play Oli's real male gaitas and love the sound. I am also a bit of a builder and last time I was in Galicia he shared his chanter plans with me in Do and Re, I am molding them from Carbon Fiber so I get a real repeatable bore. The trick is in the reeds, the female gaita reeds have a different shape than the male.

If you are interested I have copies of the secrets of the galician bagpipe available on my website along with modified practice recorders.

Hi Rob,

How does the carbon fiber affect the tone of the instrument (if at all), is it louder, brassier, mellower, or does it just sound like any other gaita?
