Gaita Galega fingering styles

Post by dan chaffee » Sat Apr 18, 2009 3:25 am

I noticed that there seems to be differences between individual Gaiteros
in how they cover the punteiro holes. Some are very close to the tip of
the fingers, while others hold their fingers nearly straight and strike the
holes further down on the finger, much as highland pipers. Before I start
making bad habits, I'd like to hear some discussion on this.
Thanks,
Dan

This is the basic OPEN fingering for a modern chanter these days:

XXX XXX X B nat
X (Thumb Hole)

XXX XXX O C
X

XXX XXO O D
X

XXX XOO O E
X

XXX OOO O F
X

XXO OOO O G
X

XOO OOO O A
X

XOOO OOO O B
X

OXX XXX O High C
X

OOO OOO O High C
O

XXX XXX O High C
O

This is the CLOSED FINGERING from Melide Zone, used by some Famous pipers like Ricardo Portela (you need to order an speciall chanter for play it):

XXX XXX X B nat
X (Thumb Hole)

XXX XXX O C
X

XXX XXO O D
X

XXX XOO O E
X

XXX OXX O F
X

XXO XXX O G
X

XOO XXX O A
X

XOOO XXX O B
X

OXX XXX O High C
X

OOO XXX O High C
O

XXX XXX O High C
O

You can do the same fingering but with the E note in closed position:

XXX XOX X E
X

This is the OLD STYLE CLOSED FINGERING from Pontevedra (played by some famous pipers like Perfecto Feijoo, also you need an speciall chanter for play it):

XXX XXX X B nat/low pitched
X (Thumb Hole)

XXX XXX O C
X

XXX XXO O D
X

XXX XOX X E
X

XXX OXX X F
X

XXO XXX X G
X

XOO XXX X A
X

XOOO XXX X B /Bb
X

OOO XXX O High C
O

XXX XXX O High C
O

This is the HALF-CLOSED FINGERING (quite similar to french fingering). You can do this in a Normal chanter taht plays in open fingering:

XXX XXX X B nat
X (Thumb Hole)

XXX XXX O C
X

XXX XXO O D
X

XXX XOO O E
X

XXX OOO O F
X

XXO XXX O G
X

XOO XXX O A
X

XOOO XXX O B
X

OXX XXX O High C
X

OOO XXX O High C
O

XXX XXX O High C
O

Main difference between Closed fingering chanters (Melide zone) and Open Chanters? The F hole. In open chanters is smaller, in closed chanters is bigger.

SORRY! I THINK YOU WAS ASKING ABOUT GALICIAN FINGERINGS!! :p

Ok...cover the holes NOT IN HIGLAND OR UILLEANN BAGPIPE WAY. Cover the hole with the top of the finger.

And an advice... Don´t play with the chanter in a right position...We usually play comfortable with the chanter curved , and with the bag not horizontally, but vertically, like Brueghel picture:

Errmmm... In the charts there are a couple of points with an extra fingerhole. (the B in the first one, and anoter B in the second one.) What's that?

I have read somewhere that in open fingering you can close the right pinky finger hole when you play notes from fa (F) to si (B), so the fingering will become:
XXX XXX X B nat
X (Thumb Hole)
XXX XXX O C
X
XXX XXO O D
X
XXX XOO O E
X
XXX OOO X F
X
XXO OOO X G
X
XOO OOO X A
X
XOOO OOO X B
X
XXX XXX O High C
O
Is that fingering also correct? It gives more stability to the puntero's grip when you play higher notes...

I still don't understand. How do you guys find another hole for just the Bs?

I don´t know where is the extra hole, My Friend Yuri. I only write that one of the X symbol is the thumb hole, and I only write this in the first note because I suppose you can see that this X symbol is the same thumb hole in all notes.

Are you asking something different?

Of course Lucky, you can do this, the way to support the chanter in open fingering can be very personal, but your way is pretty good.

I think you mean when i wrote "XOOO OOO X B"... it's only a typo, the correct one is "XOO OOO X B" (no extra hole on that side :))

Well, its' not "my" way, as I said I have read about it somewhere... I have actually learned the "OOO" way but I always have problems supporting the puntero, I discovered this technique and I found very helpful, I'm wondering if it could be considered "correct" (I think it does'nt affect te sound)...

Sadly I can't find a techer near me, so I have to learn all alone (and, I know, this is really bad :()

Yeah, I think it must be a typo. It's just that in all the charts, by different people, it's the B that gets star treatment. Check it, if you don't believe. It's as if there was a hidden extra hole, covered by the left pinky, that is used only for this.
